Privacy policy

Last updated: April 2026.

This policy describes, in plain language, what information is collected when you visit this website and how it is used. It is written in the spirit of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the recommendations of the French data protection authority (CNIL).

Who runs this site?

This site is published on an individual basis by Maël de Saint-Aubin. Full contact details are in the legal notice. For any question or request regarding your personal data, please write to: [à compléter]

Anonymous audience measurement

To see whether articles find their audience, the number of reads and shares of each article is counted. No cookie is set. On each visit a short-lived identifier is computed from your IP address, your browser (the "user-agent") and a secret salt that is rotated daily. This identifier cannot be used to recognise you across days, nor to track you across other websites. It is only used to avoid counting the same read twice in a day. This practice falls within the consent-free exemption defined by the CNIL for strictly internal audience measurement (deliberation n° 2020-091).

Account and comments

Creating an account is optional and only required to post a comment. Three pieces of information are requested: a username (publicly visible next to your comments), an email address (never displayed publicly — used for sign-in and password recovery), and a password (stored only as a cryptographic hash, never in the clear). Your comments remain displayed under your username until they are deleted.

Accounts that have been inactive for more than three years may be deleted after a prior email notice. You may also request deletion of your account at any time.

Cookies

This site does not use any advertising cookies or third-party trackers. Only a strictly necessary cookie is set when you sign in, in order to keep your session open. This cookie is removed when you sign out.

Donations

If you choose to support the project, the payment is handled entirely by Stripe on its own servers. No banking information passes through or is stored by this site. Stripe acts as an independent data controller for the information it collects; its own privacy policy then applies as a supplement.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction, and portability with regard to your personal data. To exercise these rights, write to the contact address listed above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the CNIL (cnil.fr) or with the data protection authority of your country of residence.
